This image is from the cableway central in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. It was shut down in 1987 and stands today as a monument of the coal-mining era in town. Coal mining is still a big industry here, but it takes place on other locations on the islands. After I moved here in 2006, it soon became important to me making images that shows the impact of human activities in this vulnerable arctic landscape. Most people visiting this area photograph wildlife and landscapes trying to avoid any trace of humans. I try hard to have a different and not so "glorifying" approach.

Tech info: Toyo GII 4x5", APO Sironar S 135mm f/5,6, exposed at f/32 in 120 sec. Fuji Acros 100 developed in Artdol. Swing applied so keep both wheels in focus.

While this collection will only show a selected image of their work, as noted British photographer David Ward writes "A photographer's style only becomes apparent when we study a body of their work; multiple images give us a sense of a coherent vision", you are invited to explore their work in our member's Image Gallery.
