Maybe im missing out? Or maybe im privvy to a world that some digital photographers will never know!

I still class myself as a beginner (as there is an awful lot to learn!). I develop all my work at home in my darkroom and have tremendous fun doing so. I though that this would be the ideal place to pick up hints and tips from other more accomplished and professional photographers than myself and ultimately progress in my own work.

I've had a look through some of the posts and i'm impressed by the quality of work on here, looks like im in good company.

if anyone is intrested in looking at some of my work go to my blog at;

http://danwheelerphotography.blogspot.com

Cheers :)

Howdy from Texas

I stumbled upon this forum and was instantly smitten by the tagline "Preserving and Promoting Craftsmanship in Photography"

That is exactly how I feel about film photography. Between the two (digital the other), it is the one that promotes the craftmanship aspect. The aspect that I find infinitely intriguing and rewarding.

With that thanks for sharing a forum such as this.

Hello from Delaware, APUG and CIM

Well, it's me.

Oh, alright. Here goes. My name is Chris. I am, as of late, a 4x5 film photographer hailing from the banks of the mighty Broadkiln River (a good toss can clear it) in Milton, Delaware. I am also an avid participator on APUG.ORG (pertinent as this almost appears to be a version of apug light) and I am the editor of Creative Image Maker Magazine.

When not in Nirvana behind old Bear (my 4x5 B&J Press Camera) you can find me schlepping spark plugs for Fisher Auto Parts of Staunton, Virginia in the Milford, Delaware store. I may also be lounging or traveling with my wife and two kids, reading a good book (photography or a good submarine novel), well, if I'm not outside sucking up the nature.

Nice to meet y'all.

Hello from Gdansk

Hello from not-so-cold-as-they-say Poland. I found my way to this site through the largeformatphotography.info forum where someone asked, "Where is everyone?". Someone guessed that some might be here, so I wandered in.

After a long hiatus, I started photographing again last year with a digital camera, and realized that I might as well do it the way I had always wanted to, with 4x5 film. I am most attracted to the natural landscape as subject matter, in both B/W and color. I have been known to post on www.naturephotographers.net. For those in the Philadelphia area, we might be able to meet up at Project Basho in Philadelphia /www.projectbasho.org/, a local educational organization for those interested in traditional photographic techniques, where I tend to lurk at the informal critique sessions.

I'm happy to help anyone with questions about LF technique, B/W, the Zone System, working with transparency film, scanning, etc, or interesting places to work in the local area.

Oh great, Brunner's here.....

Hi everybody. I have become so bored with digital, and realised that there is absolutely no point in trying to make digital prints like photographs when I can simply shoot film and print the real deal. Thankfully my concerns throughout stopped me getting rid of my darkroom and for some months now I have been back doing what I love : - ))

I also think that my concerns about money in relation to film were somewhat ill conceived. In the digital world of laptops, CF cards, new cameras every 6 months which you must have to get closer to real neg size, hard drives etc, etc I've spent more than I ever would have on tri-x and x-tol.

It doesn't matter what paper/ink combination you use. It's still just ink on paper. It's lifeless, and so completely without soul that I now deeply regret every image I've taken with a digital camera.

The future is bright my friends the future is SILVER!!

Cheers

David

Hi from Australia

Hi guys. I have worked in the Arts all my life, but have only seriously taken up photography in the last decade. Right now, with May around the corner, I find myself in the only two months of the year that I am not intensely involved in musical theatre. Despite my hectic schedule, I manage to shoot a fair amount of film in any given week. I shoot primarily MF, using a Rolleiflex 3.5f and Bronica GS-1 (and occasionally a Holga... I couldn't resist) I do shoot a fair amount of 35mm on a Nikon N-80, for which I have a small stash of KM25 hidden in my freezer. I tend to shoot B&W about 10:1 over film, and tend to print about 10% of my images. I'm partial to printing my images in Caffenol, and have had some good results that way, even though I've been told it can't be done. (for me, that's a good enough reason to do it anyway :P )

I'm looking forward to interacting with more "traditional photographers" here on this forum. I hope you forgive my dumb questions... (I have lots...)

Cheers,
Tom, on Point Pelee, Canada
Check out my (humble) web presence at:
http://tomoverton.images.googlepages.com/
(as always... under construction)

Hello from the beach...

Greetings All!

This seems like a pleasant place to plant my tripod...

I am on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island shooting the shoreline with various formats from 21/4 to 8x10... my preferred format is 7x11... printing in silver and platinum usually... but sometimes I do my own emulsions.

Cheers...Annie

Hello From New Mexico

Greetings;
I've 'lurked' here for awhile, finally deciding to join your photographic fellowship. Many of the usernames I recognize from other forums.

I've been an amateur/hobbiest photographer for many years, and mainly focus on large format & pinhole photography with an emphasis on the silver gelatin darkroom. I also enjoy rangefinder cameras and 'adapted optics', like improvised lenses on Speed Graphics or box camera, etc.

I've been involved in other forums, and hope to remain focussed in this forum strictly on photography, hoping to not stray too far off the beaten path into pointless philosophical arguments, etc. I'll also promise to try and be less opinionated, at least on subjects non-photographic.

I look forward to enjoying learning from this group, and perhaps contributing a bit myself.

~Joe

Hi From Connecticut

Hello everyone! I found this site the other day while looking for film related material on the net. I've been into photography seriously for about 5 years now...learning all the time. I'm a hobbyist -- in fact my day job is working with computers and networking, so I get very tired of that kind of stuff quickly when I am not at work. My love of photography was finally realized when I was sent to Afghanistan with the military back in 2002-2003 (imagine that?) Needless to say, it has been my passion outside of my cubicle walls ever since.
I mainly shoot with an RB67 that i acquired recently, and a 35mm, mostly black and white film that i develop at home and traditional printing (I rent darkroom space periodically to print my work). I am starting to shoot some medium format chromes as well. My favorite subjects are details of vintage cars, nature, and portraits. I really try to capture a moment or mood in time, or a moment in times past.

Well, much luck to this site. I hope to share and learn here with all of you. I can already see the level of talent here, and I'm really glad to find people with similar interests.

Hi from the Aegean

Traditional photographer and industrial archaeologist, working almost exclusively with LF -5x4 & 10x8 as well as 6x17. I'm 53 and have been in the darkroom since 8th grade, so thats somewhere around 40 years. I'd been doing my own b/w until the mid 80's and then got a job in a custom lab and never looked back. I learned color printing and all those other fun things you do in labs to save photographer's jobs. I ended up printing at a couple of labs in NYC and things where going nicely until I found out I'm diabetic 10 years ago. That slowed down the printing until I lost a leg 5 years ago. That ended it for awhile. Now I've just finished setting up a nice b/w darkroom and am trying to make some money at it again. Digital is interesting but I like the smell of acetic acid in the morning.

Hi: from 20mins north of boston

I am just an old guy Who is now retired and is enjoying the photograhy all over again , Did have a freelance studio back in the 70's but like all of us, made a choice to have family responce ablity so I hung it up, Now am use-ing Dslr , But am doing B&W in 120mm or 5x4 also in B&W use foma,Kodak or Ilford, when I stopped doing foto work thats all I used was Ilford B&W and Kodak Color , I am hoping to get formal type guidence in use-ing 5x4's since it give's you greater control's of your final foto! Just ran across this web site. How long have you been here?

I hope to be able to participate here and learn some more about photography. I've been in it for about seven years, and did what most others did, moved from 35mm to medium format to large format and am currently as confused as I ought to be. I was thinking that each 'upgrade' would help me with quality of my photography but found that all formats are valid, and that each have their cutting edge of advantages over the others. So I embrace them all and try to grow in my art-making.

- Thomas

Hello from Southern California

Hello, I live in the Anaheim area of Southern California. All fairly old but a lot of fun to use. In 2005 and again in 2006 I spent a most amazing time with Kevin Saitta and his family, just outside the Yosemite national park and got to see all -- well most -- of the images an Australian grows up with that are the stuff of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston legend. The internet is an amazing communication tool. Also in 2006 Robert was in Australia and I spent a great few days driving with him to the centre of Australia and "rough" camping.

Thanks for the site Robert.

Steve

Hi

Hello,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I’ve been a film guy all along, but my interest really escalated five years ago when I bought a used TLR. When, who knows... I don't really.

Went on a 14 week, 20,000km road trip last year which took up most of the year getting prepared and then getting back into the swing of things. Not going to work and the regular daily grind can be rather disruptive to ones mind! For my trip I went digital for a number of reasons but took a Mamiya 645 along and managed to expose 10 or so rolls of colour and a couple B&Ws. The nature of such a trip doesn't allow for too much mooching around with a camera in the manner I like. Still need to get the colour developed as my local E6 shop closed while I was away. Haven't found a replacement yet (not that I've been looking)

Looking forward to seeing the site develop.

regards, Nige

Greetings from Nova Scotia

Not being overly fond of computers I was lucky enough to find this site. Good to see Jorge here too, I love some of your work.

I shoot 4x5 and 8x10 primarily in Black and White at the moment but will be doing more colour once I set up my own processing via a jobo. It is extremely expensive to process colour here so that is my only alternative.

Look forward to learning heaps from you learned Gentlemen (and any ladies as well)

Thanks for the site Robert.

Craig Griffiths
