For this months entry Bob has submitted several images taken with a Zero Image 4x5 25mm f/216, with Fuji Velvia 100 film. Bob image fits in with December's theme, Pinhole Photography.

Pinhole Photography at its very core takes us back to the very basics of photography, as was often practiced in the 1800s. Pinhole cameras, like the Zero Image 2000 are simply constructed, with a simple opening, providing a fixed aperture (for the previously mentioned camera it is f/138). Shutter speeds are controlled by movement of a simple lever. There are no viewfinders for these cameras, you simply point and shoot. By the very nature of the camera, exposures tend to be long (depending upon the light levels and film chosen).

I would like to thank Bob for his outstanding image, and thank him for helping support this website over the past year. Please make sure to check out Bob's website at: http://st-cyrphotography.blogspot.com/ . You will also be able to see Bob's work in an upcoming edition of Canadian Camera, as well as in gallery showings in Belgium and Cypris. Well done Bob!!

Please join me in thanking Bob for his support, and for the outstanding photograph he has provided.

New Sub-Forum "Project Photography"

This sub-forum is a place for photographers to share projects they are working on. This months image was taken at Jekyll Island, Georgia.

In his submision Gary (glbeas) writes:

"I shot this image on a hike along the driftwood beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia with my brother and our wives. We are all photographers but my brother shoots a digital Nikon, his wife the same and my wife was shooting our Bronica system.

We were camped at the nearby campground in our popup so we got up an hour before sunrise and in minutes we were on the beach. The sun was up and we were heading around the tip of the island when I decided to backtrack and move the truck to the parking at the other end. I hiked from there and met them at the midpoint on a quite deserted stretch other than us. By that time the sun was clear of the clouds and when I turned around I saw that light bathing the trees down the beach I had just walked.

I told my brother that was some wonderful light and we should do something about it. I set up and got off two frames of 4x5 while my brother rattled off several on his D300. I've had comments about the "painterly light" on that one, painters do know what looks good don't they?"

I have to agree with Gary, there is just something about the quality of light in this photograph, a "painterly light". Please join me in thanking him for participating.

Site Outage - 8 October 2008

There will be a site outage on 8 October so the hosting service can do some server upgrades. This month we are featuring the work of David Gillanders, a photojournalist from Scotland.
I have to admit to being very fascinated by David’s entry. It is an image that speaks to its subjects, and leaves us with a “feeling” about the subject that is unmistakable. David’s image was taken in the Kievskaya district of Moscow of 2 young street kids, Andrey and Victor (L and R).

In his submission, David writes:

“I have the camera to my face a lot, looking, waiting and trying to anticipate moments where there is a balance, something that fits and in this image everything comes together for me. It's a split second event where Victor peered into the camera as Andrey reached for his lighter, a moment which in reality isn't very threatening but the composition and apparent tension display a hidden reality of the lives that these young boys lead. I got to know them both quite well and they are just young kids who have to hussle to survive, but in this moment there is a sense of hardness about them which is real and inescapable. They are loathed and shunned by almost everyone in society. Moments before I recorded this image I managed to stop the manager of a McDonald’s restaurant from beating them for taking leftovers from a bin - just by letting him see I was taking pictures. They were hungry, dejected and sad. We took a train to a forest and cooked sausages on a fire.”

I hope everyone will join me in thanking David for participating.

Site Updates - 10 August 2008

I've made a few updates this evening, mostly minor. I was in Springdale, UT just outside the entrance to Zion National Park. I was surrounded by wonderful landscape opportunities, and I did get a few nice shots in between conference sessions. This particular shot stuck with me more than the beautiful rocks and cliffs however. You know the kind, the one you keep coming back to for some reason. I will admit, I'm a real car buff. I mean I can tell you what year of mustang is in front of us at night in a rainstorm just by the shape of the tail lights. I have a real habit of spotting classics sitting out in fields, behind barns or along the highways. That's how I found several of the cars I have owned including a 57 Chevy, 65 VW convertible, and a 75 pontiac trans am.

I came out of the hotel conference center for a break and I just happened to glance across the highway and saw these two sitting there, just waiting for me to take a closer look. The light was great, late afternoon and the sun was long and low in the canyon. I had my 24-200 Tamron on my camera and started walking along the road shooting every few feet. It was like these trucks were posing for me. Every shot was better than the last. When I got the film back from the lab I just fell in love with the image. I started asking myself questions when I look at it. How long have these trucks been here? Which one was here first? Why did they get parked here and left for the elements?

I couldn't answer these questions but it did get me thinking. Since I see these kinds of cars and trucks everywhere I go, I have started a new project based on abandoned transportation. It's not limited to cars but I have started collecting some great images and stories. So far it's been a lot of fun and I am just scratching the surface. We will see how far it takes me but I hope to get a fun series out of the whole thing."

Please thank Derek for participating, and congratulate him on a well done image.

Site Updates - 3 August 2008

All,

There will be a site update this evening, around 9pm California time. His image, from Kennebunkport, Maine:

In his submission George writes:

"Last Fall we once again joined up with a Canadian couple we've known for many years. We travel from NYC and they come from Ottawa so we try to pick a destination that is equidistant to meet at for a long weekend. Last year the choice was Kennebunkport, Maine - a place that our friend Robin had often visited with his family as a child.

Unfortunately, Robin has gone "over to the dark side" and brought along his then new Nikon D-200. I carried my Nikon F-5 just to show him that film was still alive.

On Saturday morning we woke to grey skies and a light drizzle. It certainly did not look like it was going to be a good picture taking day - but we drove around the area, looked at some interesting sites and made it to lunch before the skies really opened up.

Later that afternoon the rain had ceased and we were poking around the shops in the Village of Kennebunkport. We wandered into a potter's shop and workplace and suddenly the sun came out and sent a shaft of light through the open door. The shot you see was taken in available light - although I did have the F5 on auto. The film I used, by the way, was the "newer" Portra 160NC."

Please thank George for participating. Remember, this is a monthly activity, so if you haven't been spotlighted yet, your turn will be coming.

Thanks everyone,

Featured Photographer - June 2008

Our Featured Photographer for June 2008 is Tom Overton. His submission for this feature is titled "Waiting for the Light".

In his submission Tom writes

"The flat agricultural landscape of Southwestern Ontario is dotted with many small oil fields. I had passed this particular spot on several occasions and had noted that it had considerable photographic potential. Huddled on the edge of a vast landscape perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie these two rigs seemed to imply a metaphor for isolation and for the greatness of nature. That potential stubbornly withheld its riches. Its location seemed perfect, yet day after day they remained simply a pair of lonely oil rigs. Then on the morning of Boxing Day 2007 a delicate frost coated the entire landscape. The rising sun shining through the mist gave a diffuse glow to the everyday landscape. Taken in a beautiful area near a friend's cottage, with a Rolleiflex 3.5f, using Agfa Optima 400 film. Processing and printing by St. Louis Studio, one of the last remaining pro labs in Southwestern Ontario."

You can find more of Tom's work at: http://tomoverton.images.googlepages.com or in our own member gallery.

Over the months since Tom has joined us, I've found his work quite impressive. Everything from the color image you see here, to using Caffenol as a paper developer and experiments with the new Ilford SFX. I personally have always found 6x6 to be a difficult format to work with, but I would have to say that Tom has mastered it.

Please thank and congratulate Tom on his work.

Site Updates - 6 July 2008

I'll be doing some updates to the site on Sunday, 6 July 2008, probably late in the afternoon. Nothing major, but all part of finishing out the functionality of the site. Today's changes include:

1.) Updates to the Resources page. Added a new film list. I am planning on putting up a first version this coming Sunday. The site may be down off and on throught the day Sunday. The gallery is no way feature complete, but I am at the stage that I need to test it in a real Internet environment. You are free to add images to the gallery if you would like, but keep in mind that the gallery may change, based upon technical considerations and upon your comments. The first version of the gallery will not have any of the filtering capabilities working, but you will be able to upload and look at images. The image comments may not be working fully, but I'll see how it goes over the next couple of days.

About how the gallery will work. I am designing the gallery so that each member will be able to upload a total of 25 images (at first), of any size. Only 5 images per day will be allowed to be uploaded. Note: these restrictions will not be in place for the first beta. Only forum members will be able to make comments about any image.

The reason this is taking so long, is the gallery is a fairly complex and extensive undertaking. In addition to the gallery you will see a number of other changes as well. The FAQ has been moved, replaced by "Member Central" - this is where members will manage the images they upload, as well as other functions (to be determined).

Your thoughts are welcome. So, keep watch and check back next Monday to see what is new.

Site Outage

There will be a site outage tomorrow, May 8th. I have been priviledged to know Steve for a couple of years, Steve and I once made a long journey through the Australian outback to do some photography.

Steve writes in his submission: "Water and more so rivers of any kind are a rarity here around Adelaide.
Our city is one of the driest in Australia and I image my desire to photograph water is based on the sheer lack of it.

I like contrasts within an image but not always tonal. The differences can be textures or shapes as long as they serve a purpose in the dynamic of the image.

I started using BTZS with the ExpoDev software on a Palm about 3 years ago and PMK about 2 years ago and both are excellent tools for creativity. 99% of my metering is incident but BTZS does allow Spot metering just as easily. On my second visit to the US in 2006 I met Jim Galli and purchased 2 brass lenses and yes it is true they bred like rabbits. Shooting with 5x4 a shutter is not as important as I once thought, in fact most of my lenses lack shutters but most exposures are well over 1 second so there is little need for one. I'm not certain what the attraction of the older lenses is except that they have, and to a certain degree impart their character into an image

With the Hasselblad my favourite lens has always been the 50mm Distagon but with 5x4 I find I am nearly always reaching for a longer focal length above normal. I have a 90mm for the 5x4 but don't seem to reach for it very often, it just feels too wide.

My photographic philosophy is very simple -- God has given us a truly amazing creation and I will continue to attempt to capture the power of that in even the simplest of locations."

I hope everyone will join me in thanking Steve for participating.
New Subforum

I have created a new subforum, Articles. It is intended that the site will have an active Article section, and I would like to have a separate forum for members to discuss them. I look forward to hearing everyone's opinions and suggestions for the various articles, either already posted, or planned for the future.

Note: the article system is open to all members who wish to contribute. The subject must be on any form of traditional photography.

Thanks,

Site Updates 4/6/08

I've made a few updates to the site this evening:

Updated chat room software - mostly stability changes, nothing major.

Updated the menu system on the site's main pages.

Uploaded the framework for the new site Member Image Gallery.

Uploade a new article on the Nikon F6.

Most of the rest of the changes are backend stuff, like an updated CSS, and tools to help me manage the site better.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Featured Photographer - April 2008

I would like to announce our Featured Photographer for April 2008. This month, Travis Nunn has agreed to be in the spotlight. He has submitted a wonderful color image of a Great Egret taken at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia (http://www.fws.gov/northeast/chinco/) on a Canon 35mm, with Fuji Velvia film. Travis' image is a wonder of simplicity. I'm also excited, because this is the first image we have had that isn't a landscape image - it shows that great wildlife work can be done on film.

This image will come up automatically, beginning on 1 April, California time.

As always, my goal is to highlight photographers from different areas, doing different types of work, wherever possible. There are so many good photographers here, and I will be asking those who haven't been asked in the future.

Shortly, I'm going to be asking for larger images from those that have already submitted images the past few months. I've got the Featured Member page almost done, but the images I have (except from Travis) are too small to show off effectively. This will be a Flash presentation, and I think everyone will be happy with it.

Thanks to everyone for participating in this,

Chat Room is Down

I'm in the process of upgrading the Chat Room software, but so far the upgrade hasn't been successful. This month, Eric Rose has agreed to be in the spotlight. He has submitted a wonderful color image of Lake Annette in Canada's Banff National Park.

As Eric writes in his submission:
"There are so many stunning vistas to challenge your compositional skills. The colours are so vivid as to seem almost unreal."
I couldn't agree more. This is an image that makes you stop and think, because in reality you are looking at a reflection in the lake. I somehow suspect that I would have passed this image up had I been there, but Eric was sensitive to his surroundings to capture it beautifully.

As always, my goal is to highlight photographers from different areas, doing different types of work, wherever possible. This month, Eirik Berger has agreed to be in the spotlight. He has submitted a wonderful B&W image taken of Cableway Central in his homeland of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway. I'm glad we have an photographer of Eirik's caliber on board this forum.

As always, my goal is to highlight photographers from different areas, doing different types of work, wherever possible. This new chat software works pretty slick, it doesn't use any special software that some systems you may have used to (no Java). It uses a technology called AJAX, which is supported natively on all modern browsers. There are a number of features that may be added in the future, including Moderated chats and a built in instant messenger system.

While I have tried to test this out throughly before I put it up, with only one person to do the testing, it is a bit hard at times. So, if you run into any issues, please let me know, and I'll address them as soon as possible.

To access this new feature, you need to go to the main site, and click on Chat Room from the top level menu system (not installed on the forum yet). From this page you will see the rooms available, there are two main rooms. Only the General Discussion room is open at the moment. Please note, the chat room is only available to forum members, and you must be logged in to access it.

Please provide me any feedback you may have.

Thanks,

Featured Photographer

I thought I would pass along some news about the Featured Photographer feature that you have no doubt seen on the front page of this website, and to solicit any feedback you may have.

The current featured photographer, Richard Nelridge, graciously became our first photographer. Even though I asked Rich very late in the events leading up to the launch of this site, he quickly provided the needed image and text description. At the beginning of January you will see a new Featured Photographer on the home page. I won't say who it is other than this photographer's work will be recognized by many here - you will need to check the page on the 1st to find out.

It is my intention that this feature will be a monthly one, with a change of photographers starting around the beginning of the month. This rotation will involve different photographers, with different levels of skill, different photographic focus, and different geographic locations. Currently, I have only solicited one image, but in the future those asked to be the Featured Photographer will be asked for at least 4 or 5 images to give an idea of their overall work, as well as a short biography (nothing extensive).

So, the plan is to include as many people as possible. There is also a Featured Photographer page (currently listed as Featured Member) in development. From this page you will be able to see all the past Featured Photographers.

I see this as one means where we can learn more about one another, and other types of photography. I hope this is a feature that you will find useful and beneficial.

Forum Outage

All,

I know the forum was out for awhile this morning. I've been working with the vendor but don't have a solution as of yet. I normally monitor the site all day to watch for this. It seems mainly to happen during periods when the forum is quiet.

I apologize for this, and I hope to find a solution shortly.

Site Updates and Future Plans

Greetings everyone,
I'd like to thank everyone who has signed up for TraditionalPhotographer.NET. It is your presence there that will make this site a success, and I am genuinely appreciative for your participation.

I'd like to also apologize for the current state of this site. This website is raw ... very raw. I had intended to make the site more feature complete and functional before putting it up. However, I saw an increasing trend towards digital photography on LF Forum, where I sometimes participate, and I also saw an increasing feeling of animosity on APUG on several subjects. For this reason, I felt that I could not wait any longer.

Having said all that, I would like to take the time to give you an update on what I am doing here, and what I have planned for the near future of this website. You no doubt have seen a number of empty pages here and pages that don't go anywhere. Have faith, I am planning on having it all complete as soon as I can.

Here are some of the features of the site that are planned, some already in development, and some only in the design phase:

Member Gallery - a member gallery is planned, where registered members may show off their work. It will be similar in concept to that which you see on APUG.

Classifieds - a classified section is planned, where registered and termed (member who have been on registered for a certain period of time) may sell various items. This will be similar in concept to that which is on APUG.

Articles - an article subsystem is in development. The purpose of this section is to enable members to write about different subjects relating to photography, traditional methods and process, business issues related to photography and travel articles.

Resources - a subsystem to enable members and visitors to find out more about traditional photography, where to purchase supplies, lab processing, public darkrooms, in short anything that would be beneficial to the advancement of traditional photography.

Newsletter - a monthly email newsletter is planned.

The forum part of this website seems to be working much better than when I first put it up live. However, there are either a number of features it doesn't have that I would like to see. I plan on updating this portion, however, for the time being, I've left it alone. The forum subsystem is a commercial package I purchased from the UK, and I know there are updates scheduled for it sometime in the beginning of the new year. However, since I acquired the source code for it, if those updates are delayed, I may consider making the changes myself. Regardless, I will keep you posted on everything I do here.

There are many more features that I am considering, but haven't decided on yet. Features like either a Knowledge Base or Wiki function, for example. Your suggestions are appreciated.

I also wanted to point out that it is not my intent to try to replace APUG or LF, or to draw members away from these sites, but rather to provide an alternative viewpoint on traditional photography. I won't use my membership in these organizations to seek more members for this site - except for those who have asked me for an alternative towards them. However, everyone here is free to recommend this site to anyone they think may be interested in joining or participating. One side note, I have turned the registration validation feature back on (yesterday), which means a valid email address must be submitted for all new members.

Thanks for participating, and thanks for your support and your suggestions.

Making a list, and checking it twice....

I'm making a list of traditional processes for the About page and would like your feedback to make sure that I don't miss anything. Please post those processes you think should be included. The list is wide open, but remember, it must be traditional.

Thanks,

Still some Site Instability

The forum portion of the site is still experiencing occasional instability. I've been working with the vendor to try to solve it, they are in the UK, but we still don't have a handle on what is causing it. The site was going down on an almost daily basis a couple of weeks ago, but seems to have stabilized the past week. Until today, the site had gone 5 days without any issues.

If you see the site down, just check back later. I monitor it frequently throughout the day, and I know how to quickly restore it.

Thanks for your patience,

Login not working on Firefox

It seems like the login for Firefox is not working. I took one of my old articles from my personal site to start with. I still have to clean up the navigation on this site, it just doesn't fit with the rest of the site. Also, the tools to add comments needs to be added, as well as other article tools.

I added some more detail to the About page, explaining the philosophy behind this site (it is still incomplete however).

I've started building the Resource page backend.

More of the HTML has been cleaned up, to make it more compatible between IE and Firefox. FYI: I am trying to get the front portion of the site as XHTML/CSS compliant as I can (the forum is not).

The site footer has been added to the forum as well.

The QuickLinks menu is coming along nicely.

There are a number of backend pieces that have been worked, that are not readily visible, but are necessary for features that are yet to come.

As always, if you see something that doesn't work right, let me know. This forum uses a different software base than some of the other forums you may be familiar with (like APUG and LF). This means it may work differently from what you expect, so don't hesitate to ask. I'll be putting together a series of FAQ questions to explain how it all works.

Thanks for your patience,
