However, we have the Member Gallery to help on that somewhat. I'm thankful to all who have participated.

RE: Featured Photographer - June 2008

Thanks to all for your kind comments. And thank you to Robert for the invitation to show my work. I really agonized over the choice of images for this, so it is really gratifying that this photo works for others and not just myself.

Cheers,

RE: Featured Photographer - June 2008

Congrats Tom! The isolation you have portrayed is very real. The pastel colours and the composition add to the sense of dangerous drama in an area such as this.
Thanks for posting this image.

Steve

RE: Featured Photographer - June 2008

Very cool Tom, congratulations!

RE: Featured Photographer - June 2008

Great work! Living in Alberta gives me lots of opportunity to shot pump-jacks but none I have taken are as expressive as this one.

Eric

Featured Photographer - June 2008

Our Featured Photographer for June 2008 is Tom Overton. His submission for this feature is titled "Waiting for the Light".

In his submission Tom writes

"The flat agricultural landscape of Southwestern Ontario is dotted with many small oil fields. I had passed this particular spot on several occasions and had noted that it had considerable photographic potential. Huddled on the edge of a vast landscape perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie these two rigs seemed to imply a metaphor for isolation and for the greatness of nature. That potential stubbornly withheld its riches. Its location seemed perfect, yet day after day they remained simply a pair of lonely oil rigs. Then on the morning of Boxing Day 2007 a delicate frost coated the entire landscape. The rising sun shining through the mist gave a diffuse glow to the everyday landscape. Taken in a beautiful area near a friend's cottage, with a Rolleiflex 3.5f, using Agfa Optima 400 film. Processing and printing by St. Louis Studio, one of the last remaining pro labs in Southwestern Ontario."

You can find more of Tom's work at: http://tomoverton.images.googlepages.com or in our own member gallery.

Over the months since Tom has joined us, I've found his work quite impressive. Everything from the color image you see here, to using Caffenol as a paper developer and experiments with the new Ilford SFX. I personally have always found 6x6 to be a difficult format to work with, but I would have to say that Tom has mastered it.

Please thank and congratulate Tom on his work.
