The one in the Soapbox is completely separate from the one I started, although a bunch of posts were pulled from the one I started. The one you read is a bunch of off-topic BS.

I can sum everything up by saying that a lot of things happened in a very short time, I asked what was going on and then the feeding frenzy started.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition
Travis Nunn (4/8/2008)I will say, however, that the thread I started got merged with several others and it quickly morphed into something much different than the original intent.
The thread I saw was in the SoapBox and was obviously a combination of various threads - very hard to follow. I started the first thread on it asking what was going on immediately after APUG, Calumet and Bill Schwab bailed. I tried to find another workshop but the only other one I was interested in was Les McLean's but it was the day before I was scheduled to arrive so I couldn't make it. That's the main reason I've decided not to go to Foto3. The other reason is I have a really bad feeling about it. I've met Sean and Les, I've emailed back and forth with Bill before, but I've never met or spoken with Steve. I've got nothing to go on other than my gut feeling.

I will say, however, that the thread I started got merged with several others and it quickly morphed into something much different than the original intent.

Just my humble opinions. They're worth exactly what you paid for them ;)
RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

Sean's done the right thing and closed off the thread.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition
Jorge Gasteazoro (4/8/2008)
I went back to visit APUG because of foto3, and mostly just saw what was going on with the conference and moved on.
There does seem to be a high level of animosity over there on this subject. Sad.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

I went back to visit APUG because of foto3, and mostly just saw what was going on with the conference and moved on. Like you Eric I never enter contests, but with Ann Tucker as judge I thought it was a good deal, how many times do you get to have a museum curator view your work? other than at fotofest, etc. Now that they have changed the judges I am no longer thinking about it.

I understand people who are not LF users cancelling their reservations, but c'mon, to try to sabotage the conference just because APUG pulled out?...that is just plain silly.

Anyway, the good thing about this is that I no longer have a reason to visit APUG once more.... :)

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

Hey Jorge I kept in touch with you! I love you man (manly hug) LOL. I will be in Utah, AZ etc two weeks prior to the conference so it's been a non issue for me. It's to bad APUG pulled out and we may never really find out what happened. Frankly I don't care. I also don't enter into photo contest either as I find them a waste of time.

I was in the darkroom last night and did a 16x20 of one of my Harley negs. SWEET! The other night my buddy with the 8x20 Canham came over with the negs we shot together and we contact printed them. Also very SWEET. This is why I do what I do. It's not to sit back and yak on forums. Geez I just got roasted by some wanker on APUG who probably hasn't shot as many photos total as I shot in one week when I was shooting professionally. Heck I've worn out probably a dozen cameras. But alas everyone has the right to their opinion and the ability to express it. Oh well time to go back into lurk mode again.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

I haven't really kept up with what is going on in APUG, mostly because I became persona non grata there when I started this forum (not to everyone though). I was told about some of the threads going on over there, but haven't looked (except this morning), and outside what Steve Simmons posted I know very little. I am disappointed in what is going on there, about foto3, but not really surprised.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

I kind of figured it was about money. As I understand these things, you have to pay the venue in advance to reserve the space, if Steve paid for this, then he has the right to have some control over the expenses AND the revenues.

What susprises me the most is some of the workshop instructors pulling out because APUG pulled out AND going beyond that and trying to deliberately sabotage the conference. Seems to me this is a misplaced loyalty, lets face it, the people who HAVE to use film are large format photographers. There are no 8x10 digital backs and the few 4x5 that there are, are outrageously expensive. I lost a lot of respect for those people who pulled out just because APUG pulled out. I understand Les pulling out, there are priorities in life, but Schwab? A guy who in fact does a lot of digital work, but uses APUG only to get atendees to his workshops! Then we have this PE guy, who is speculating what Kodak will think?!?...Kodak cares about money, if I organize a film buy and meet their quota, they will sell it to me even if I am the last guy on earth using film.

People cancelling their attendance just because APUG pulled out smacks more of cult following than support of film and traditional photography, a bunch of lemmings...but then it should not surprise me. When I got banned from APUG the only time I heard from an APUG member (of course with a few exceptions) was when they wanted something from me, help with pt/pd printing, etc, etc.

Ah well, as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions... :)

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

APUG pulling out didn't surprise me. I feel for Steve. For the APUG conference I was the treasurer and I can tell you I lost a lot of sleep over the crap that was going on. Not that anything untoward was happening, just that trying to keep control of the finances was a major challenge.

There were to many people making decisions that had a huge impact on the financial obligations without letting all the members of the steering committee know. Steve wanting to get control over the budget is reasonable and by the sounds of it overdue.

I wish him luck.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

wow....have you guys been following the shit fest and bashing that has been going on against foto3 on APUG?

I understand wanting to promote traidtional photography, but the behavior of some people there is bordering on fanaticism. Worse, it seems someone on the inside is trying to deliberately sabotage the conference. Yesterday I received an anonymous e mail telling me the judges for the competetion had pulled out as well, SS had not mentioned this in any forum (shame on him) but it was either a very good guess or the person who sent me this e mail knew more than the average joe.

The saddest part is that now, instead of traditional photography being well represented it will be conspicuos for it's absence.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

I don't intend to enter either. Since Simmons mentioned that VC has always been financially responsible for the conference I am betting they must have had a tiff over sharing the revenues or maybe the APUG owner wanted to have his plane and stay covered or some such thing...who cares? I normally don't enter contests since I really don't care what some schmuck thinks about my pics, but Tucker is a worthwhile judge.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

I wasn't planning on entering anything, simply because I haven't had the time to prepare anything. I've been so hammered with work the past three months, that I've barely had time to do anything.

In addition to APUG, I hear Calumet also pulled its sponsorship. Looks like View Camera will be carrying this one alone.

RE: First Annual Foto3 Competition

Well, now that APUG is not a sponsor in the foto3 thing, anybody entering the contest? I am thinking of submitting a few pieces. I lived in Houston and frequently visited the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and they have a very nice photography collection, Ann Tucker is very good and the best thing is that she is not stuck up, heck, the Museum even buys photographs from E bay! I don't know the other judge, but I guess it is worth a shot....what do you say?

First Annual Foto3 Competition

Found this over at LF Forum:
Open to all photographers.
