I'd like to announce that Derek Lofgreen is our featured photographer for August 2008.

In his submission, on an image taken just outside Zion National Park, Derek writes:

"I was on a business trip in Utah two years ago. I was in Springdale, UT just outside the entrance to Zion National Park. I was surrounded by wonderful landscape opportunities, and I did get a few nice shots in between conference sessions. This particular shot stuck with me more than the beautiful rocks and cliffs however. You know the kind, the one you keep coming back to for some reason. I will admit, I'm a real car buff. I mean I can tell you what year of mustang is in front of us at night in a rainstorm just by the shape of the tail lights. I have a real habit of spotting classics sitting out in fields, behind barns or along the highways. That's how I found several of the cars I have owned including a 57 Chevy, 65 VW convertible, and a 75 pontiac trans am.

I came out of the hotel conference center for a break and I just happened to glance across the highway and saw these two sitting there, just waiting for me to take a closer look. The light was great, late afternoon and the sun was long and low in the canyon. I had my 24-200 Tamron on my camera and started walking along the road shooting every few feet. It was like these trucks were posing for me. Every shot was better than the last. When I got the film back from the lab I just fell in love with the image. I started asking myself questions when I look at it. How long have these trucks been here? Which one was here first? Why did they get parked here and left for the elements?

I couldn't answer these questions but it did get me thinking. Since I see these kinds of cars and trucks everywhere I go, I have started a new project based on abandoned transportation. It's not limited to cars but I have started collecting some great images and stories. So far it's been a lot of fun and I am just scratching the surface. We will see how far it takes me but I hope to get a fun series out of the whole thing."

Please thank Derek for participating, and congratulate him on a well done image.

Derek,

Great image. Your new project sounds fascinating. I might suggest that you start a thread in one of the photography forums about the project, and perhaps post a few pictures of the project as it progresses. Sort of like I did with the Sydney Opera House photos in the Travel forum. I know I'd like to see more of this series.

Thanks for sharing your work with us,

Robert M. Teague

Derek,

I love the photo and the story.

Zion's a bit to the north of Rte. 66 and "Radiator Springs" - but this photo could well have been a "teaser" for Pixar's recent movie "Cars"

I'm thinking Newman a.k.a. Doc Hudson....

Keep up the good work.

George
