Can anyone identify these rock formations for me? I'm not real knowlegeable about geology and I'm trying to figure out what this rock formation is. I don't think it is volcanic, but I don't know that for sure.

Both images were taken at Glen Helen Gorge, in the West MacDonnell National Park, in Australia's Northern Territory, about 140 km west of Alice Springs. This particular location is along the Finke River, considered by some to be the oldest river in the world.

Thanks in advance,

Robert M. Teague

Hi Robert,

the person who might be able to help you with this is Graeme Hird, who used to be on APUG and now runs acutance.net. He is a geologist in another life and would probably be able to tell you what they are, or failing that where you could get the info you need.

Cheers

I am so out of practice as a Geologist , especially without being able to see the rocks a bit closer, I am really reluctant to take a guess.

I think those are the ever elusive "Tan Layered River Rocks" also known as Tanuslayriver. I'm about as good at remembering rock formations as I am at botany. Yeah, that's a "Green" tree.

Thanks guys, I'll go over to Acutance and ask Graeme. I think I still have an account over there.

Rich, not to worry. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, but I can't solve a differential equation to save my life anymore.
